The classification of scientific articles is important for the correct presentation of research results and the logical structuring of information. Understanding the features of each type of scientific article is important not only for researchers, but also for readers, as it contributes to a better understanding of the essence of the research. What types of scientific articles are there? What are their specific features? We will discuss this in our new material.

What is a scientific article?
Scientific article is a type of scientific publication that presents the results of one or several studies united by a common topic and carried out with the participation of one or several researcher-authors. Scientific articles may be published in periodical or non-periodical publications.
Classification of scientific articles
Scientific articles can be divided according to many criteria, the key ones being the following:
By type of research:
- review articles
- research articles
- methodological articles
By publication purpose:
- Empirical articles. Based on data obtained in the course of the conducted research. Such works describe the methodology and the results obtained, and conclusions are formulated on their basis.
- Theoretical articles. In this type of article, researchers develop or improve existing theoretical approaches. They include a comprehensive analysis of the literature, the formulation of new theories and the determination of their practical significance.
- Methodological articles. This type of article is devoted to the description, justification or improvement of a research method or a method of data analysis.
By target audience:
- Professional articles. This type of publication is aimed at specialists in a specific field of science. They are distinguished by the use of professionally oriented terminology and are intended for readers who already have basic or in-depth knowledge of the topic.
- Popular science articles. This publication format is intended for a wide range of readers. In them, the material is presented in accessible language, making scientific information available to the general reader.
Main types of scientific articles
Review articles
In this type of work, authors summarise existing information on a certain topic, relying on relevant scientific sources. Such articles usually do not contain new primary experimental data, but they offer generalisation, analysis and a new interpretation of existing research.
There are three key types of review articles:
- meta-analyses
- systematic reviews
- literature reviews
Such publications are important because they help analyse the current state of science in a particular field and often become the basis for further research. Despite many prejudices regarding review-type articles, preparing this type of research is just as difficult as preparing an original article.
Editorial boards of scientific journals set fairly high requirements for this type of article, demanding not just a literature review, but an analytical approach and new interpretations of existing results.
Original research
Original scientific articles are the most common publication format in which authors present the results of their own research. They contain a detailed description of the methods used and the data obtained from their own studies.
Usually, such results are obtained from experimental or analytical studies, during which hypotheses are tested and answers are provided to specific scientific questions.
The generally accepted structure of such articles corresponds to the IMRAD format (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion):
- introduction
- methods
- results
- discussion
Original scientific articles are usually the most cited, as they have a direct impact on the development of science. This type of publication is considered the most appropriate for presenting the main results of dissertation research.
Clinical studies
Clinical studies have a format and structure similar to original articles. Such works analyse medical data, the effectiveness of methods of diagnosis, treatment or prevention. A separate format is the description of a clinical case.
Such works usually cover the analysis of symptoms, diagnostic methods, as well as treatment or prevention options.
This type of work forms the basis of evidence-based medicine, and is therefore one of the most popular in modern medical publications.
Experimental studies
Experimental studies are a type of scientific article aimed at studying the relationship between two or more variables. The main goal of such studies is to collect data that will confirm or refute the chosen hypothesis. That is why experimental articles are sometimes called “hypothesis testing” or a method of deductive analysis.
The results obtained have a large number of possible applications in various fields of science, but they are most often used in medicine, psychology, social sciences and engineering disciplines.
Case studies
Case studies are scientific articles used to describe unique practical cases, usually in medicine, social sciences or engineering. They make it possible to show the practical application of scientific approaches and to analyse a specific situation in detail.
In medical journals, case studies often contain descriptions of rare diseases, atypical clinical situations or unique treatment methods. Such articles are highly valued for their practical significance, contribution to the development of medicine and potential usefulness as a source for future research.
This list is not exhaustive, we have selected the most common types of scientific articles. Understanding the features of each type will help not only to present research results clearly and logically, but also to improve the ability to navigate scientific publications.
